Don’t shoot, just shout. ‘When confronted by a scuffle or a fleeing suspect, policemen are no longer allowed to fire warning shots,’ according to an order issued by the Philippine National Police in response to criticisms being hurt in police operations. This is a statement netizens are now throwing at a policeman firing a gun at a civilian posted on Facebook and YouTube just a few hours ago.
Members of the Police conduct ‘Oplan Sita’ as part of the stepped-up campaign of the Philippine National Police to stop criminal elements on motorbikes. Crimes involving riding-in-tandem are reportedly increasing in number nationwide. In the past months, more and more crimes involving suspects in motorbikes has been circling the net and news. Oplan Sita aims to lessen if not eliminate cases involving suspects riding in tandem.
Though the video was a little hazy, it can be seen that the policeman fired a shot to the ground, apparently to warn the civilian who walked away from him. A few vehicles passed in front of the person taking pictures and the video, making it hard to figure out what really happened. As the group were stopped and being interrogated, a man wearing a sleeveless shirt approached one of the officers and said something. Others claim to see that the policeman was about to handcuff him when he hit the officer and walked away. This was when the policeman could no longer tolerate the man’s behavior that he fired a ‘warning shot’ to the ground, before pointing the gun at the man’s face.
Since the man was supposedly ‘unarmed’, netizens are now criticizing the policeman for such reckless acts. But there are always two sides to a story. Citizens must always respect a man in uniform. He is merely doing his job, and we should always abide by the law. But sometimes, there are officers who abuse power that people now tend to stereotype policemen. On the other hand, the policeman should have not fired his gun—especially with his gun pointed to the ground. He could’ve hurt others who were merely watching.
